Its just a question of directors style. I suppose censors have different attitudes in different countries too,
they have pulked the stick out her spagetti bunms
The British film industry had a stricter code about horrific elements and blood than about sexy stuff. Christopher Lee has said that Hammer used to sprinkle blood around for the British scene; scatter more blood for the American release; and slosh it around for European release!

They used to have, I believe, an X certificate if the level of horror was considered too much.

Italy has never had the restrictions that British and American film industries dealt with. Thus, it was all stops out for Argento, Bava and the rest. Of course, a lot of their stuff looks awfully tame now. Back then, most theaters wouldn't play the ultra-gruesome ones, at least here in the Midwest. Perhaps they played in Chicago, but you wouldn't have found them outside that area. "Suspiria" played at the drive-in here; I remember the brave souls who went to see it regaling us with stories about showers of maggots. *GAG*

I was trying to find backing for the above except that would take copying large portions of books I own. I couldn't find what I needed on the Net. I'm going from memory, so I hope I didn't err too much.
I am not so sure you are right
