Answers: Which film would you describe as powerfull?
i agree there..no one else wanted to see it so i went to the cinema alone and was totally absorbed ( was shocked how quickly the time went ) but i also found shawshank redemption, awakenings, powder, green mile, in the name of the father, gorillas in the mist and saving private ryan powerful and thought provoking.great question btw.
Schindler's List?
A Town Called Alice
Definitely Shindler's List. I think American History X is pretty powerful too.
Zulu
Escape from Sobibor

I watched this on the TV back in 1987 and it made a very sizeable impression on me.

This is a gripping piece of television drama with a few familiar faces - Alan Arkin, Rutger Hauer, Jack Shepherd, all coming together to attempt what was seen as unthinkable - to break out of a Nazi death camp.

The story was not familiar to many at the time it was shown in 1987 and I remember Breakfast TV actually interviewed a couple of the survivors, . It is edge of the seat stuff as you watch the escape plan unfold and through the story, you find yourself caring for the people involved and hoping that against all the odds that they make it.

The break-out itself is also tense as each of the main protagonists make their desparate bid for freedom. What is useful at the end, is a narrator telling you what happened to each of the main characters in as much as was known in the 1980s. Twenty years have passed since, so perhaps some of those have sadly passed away; but it is a testament to the human spirit to know that out of a seemingly hopeless situation, the unthinkable became the possible so that another part of the Nazi atrocities became public knowledge.

It was an embarassment to the Third Reich that this escape happened and the camp was razed to the ground although I believe there is some kind of memorial there and quite rightly so.

The film is not done Hollywood style - it has moments where you are disgusted by man's inhumanity to man and the horrific choices forced on the inmates. It also has its moments of hope where even in such terrible conditions, people can try to live as humans and help each other in times of searing grief.

It is something to show older children/teenagers to let them try to make sense of a time when the world of their grandparents had gone mad. But in this time of constant terrorism threats, it has a voice that deserves still be heard.
Mystic River
Crash - It really opened my eyes about the state of human nature towards race, not just black and white.
I still have to watch this film,i'm saving for the right mood i think

From a war perspective

(1)Thin Red line - Surreal,poetic and moving
(2)Saving Private Ryan - Intense, real and a gripping experience on the big screen

Western:

(1)Unforgiven - believable,exciting and touching

Sci-fi:

(1)Sunrise - also gripping and strangely moving whilst slightly mystical

Fantasy:

(1)Lord of the Rings - trilogy - The most romantic story i have seen on the big screen, almost euphoric at times
La vita é bella, or life is beautiful, by Roberto Benigni. Every single person in the movie theatre cried, unashamedly.

It won three Oscars, it would have won many more had it been in English and not in Italian, I'm convinced.

another film in the genre or should I say documentary is "shoah" which as far as I can remember is between 5 or 8 hours long and needs to be watched in chunks. It contains interviews with holocaust survivors, collaborators ect, real life locations in Poland and is incredibly haunting. Just found out that "shoah" is the hebrew term for holocaust so that explains alot.
The 25th Hour. Powerful ending.

Same with the infamous F. U. Scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Za2k5wA3...
To Kill A Mockingbird, it hasnt lost a bit of its power to this day. Wonderful film.
