Not sure that I understand your question. Maybe you can re-phrase it. Are you asking which is more suspenseful the short story called "The Birds" in the book "The Apple Tree" or the movie version based on the short story? I've seen the movie The Birds many times and the birds play an integral role in the movie and are of near equal importance to the storyline. Did you notice that there isn't any music in this film? Over the opening credits we hear birds...and more birds. Alfred Hitchcock is indeed the "Master of Suspense". In fact, I found it's scarier when there are no birds on screen. The high tension, the long silence, the uncertainty of what will happen next, and the big mystery as to why the birds are suddenly attacking people in the first place only adds to the suspense. The attacking birds exemplify evil while Cathy's birds are just the opposite, i.e., they are Love birds.
The main characters are all sooo complex. Tippi Hedren's flawed character, Melanie, has some difficult issues to deal with, like the fact that her mother deserted her and her father and she now longs for a mother figure. She also demonstrates some immaturity or attention-seeking ways in that she is a prankster (pretending she's a clerk in the pet shop) and still calls her father "Daddy". Mitch, himself, has a strained relationship with his own mother Lydia.
the storyline itself...that something so mundane -- birds -- could suddenly go awry and wreak havoc in a small town. and even more suspenseful, hitchcock never explains WHY the birds went on the attack...
