There are some poisons that will kill you if you get enough in contact with your skin. Whatever was in that dress reacted strongly with the skin and burned it. If I wanted that reaction I would use lye and mix in some cyanide or something. The sweat would cause a reaction in the lye to burn the skin which would allow the cyanide to enter. I have no idea if this would work like it did in the movie but that is what I have always imagined it to be.
