I didn't see Brokeback, but I thought Crash was an amazing movie.

As with any contest about something subjective like movies, it's probably not fair to take any of the Oscar categories as literally being the best of the year. For one thing, the movie has to be seen by enough of the voting member to be nominated and and eventually win.

To a certain extent, it winds up turning into a popularity contest. For example, there was virtually no way Martin Scoresese wasn't going to win the Director Oscar last year once he was nominated. I would have taken a vastly superior film to beat him and there wasn't one last year.

On the whole, I would say the Oscar winners are usually among the best of that year - at least in the top 10. And most years I think it's pretty easy to pick 5 nominees that were clearly a cut above the others; in some cases they wind up having difficulty coming up with 5 that are nomination worthy.
I can't compare Crash to Brokeback Mountain and say which is better because I only saw the latter and not the former. But I wouldn't give BbM any particular high rating anyway, because I didn't think it was all that great of a movie.
I think Crash was better by far. The Oscars are voted upon by those in the industry. So I think they know what they are talking about. If my annual raise was based upon those who did what I did it would be far greater, however it's based upon a corporate crunching of numbers. So, Yha I think the Oscars are fair "enough". Just don't piss off you co-workers ;]
Brokeback was kinda boring. But I do think it should've won for it's originality. I mean, gay cowboy story? U don't watch that everyday, do u?
Not to be homophobic but it would be a humiliation to this country if a gay porno won Best Picture of the Year. Crash is something we can take more seriously and cling easier to its meaning. Brokeback Mountain is just a movie nobody can take seriously.
I rarely agree with the Oscars. As a film buff and movie lover, I'm less and less inclined to to look forward to this event since they've been making so many dreadful, inexcusable selections in the recent past. I find myself groaning more than applauding. Yes, I DO applaud and cheer at home. Actually, even my mother has surprised me by doing this. Too often, we've been booing choices.

By the way, why would it be bad for "Brokeback Mountain" to win, but it's OK for a "song" about a pimp to win?! That was an absolutely shameful thing!
