This film was loosely based on the true story of Sarah Tobias who was gang raped at a bar in New Bedford MA in 1983. You can read the real story here-

It is interesting to note that the men charged with cheering the rape on were actually aquitted. Two years after the rape, Sarah was killed in a drunk driving accident.
