What was the name of this movie????? Something about computer love...?!

Question: It was set in somewhere like San Francisco, somewhere with a lot of hills in the mid to early 80's. A young single guy (dark brown hair, kinda tall think david schwimmer) living in an apartment (I think he's like a music composer) is always on his computer & then one day some blonde chick enters the picture & the computer gets jealous & tries to keep them apart...I can just see this one scene from it, but I remember as a kid I thought it ws really cool. For all I know it was a crappy movie but I've always wanted to see it again. I appreciate the help remembering.

Electric Dreams (1984)

This was long, long before David Schwimmer. The star is Lenny Von Dohlen, and his dream lady is Virginia Madsen. The computer's voice is supplied by Bud Cort. The wonderful score is by ELO!

Also, he's a non-computer person but is trying to develop an earthquake-proof brick shape. It's suggested that he buy a computer, so he ends up with one that the salesgirl drops then offers him at a lowered price. When he gets it hooked up, he follows the directions to attach controls throughout his apartment. Later, he ends up pouring liquid on the computer when it overheats, which starts changing its already-jumbled innards. Oh! He also buys one of those boxes to give the PC a voice, which is Bud Cort doing a goofy, cartoony-sounding vocalization.

Then, Miles gets a crush on the beautiful blonde girl who moves in upstairs (I think it is); Madeline plays cello in an orchestra. Edgar also becomes infatuated and plays a duet/duel with her, which she thinks Miles did! That's why she thinks he's a composer/musician. It's hilarious when he tries to get Edgar to help him court her by writing poems and songs.

"Electric Dreams" (1984) is correct, and it's among my favorites. I don't think it's "crappy" at all! It was very clever in fact, a variation of the old theme of computer (Edgar, in this case) falling in love, as was done in the old "Twilight Zone" episode. Except this one is a happy ending, with the two young people getting together, and Edgar bursting forth into the world outside, taking the music he created (ELO's of course) everywhere.

One of my favorite bits is the running gag of Miles being called "Moles" because he misspelled his name then entered it on the new computer he's struggling with. I also love the series of events that gives birth to Edgar's personality.

Here's the musical duel between cello and computer on YouTube:

I love this part and the music!

From what I've seen on the Net just now, the film has developed a cult following! Actually, I thought I was one of the few people who remembered this film, which I've watched an embarrassing amount of times because I have it on videotape! I'm a fan of all three of the leading actors.
