In the movie Taxi Driver, Why does Travis Bickle want to kill the senator?!

Question: I've always loved that movie, but I don't understand his motivation there. Help please?

I think that he arrive a decisive point that he was going to do something about the filth as he put it, prostitution, corruption, and societies decay, and also to grab Betsy's attention be it good or bad and at that point the chemistry of the events was not right and he called the whole thing off by leaving the scene. Travis was a ticking time bomb ready to explode and he did on the pimp, I also think that the writer was trying to potray a loner that was capable of assinating political leaders, it was a character buildup and attemped to show you how far he was able to go.
Is that H.Spencer as in Eraserhead? oh dear I love it!
I think the reason Travis wanted to kill him is b/c he got sick of all the corruption, prostitution & drug deals in town and he blame him for not cleaning up. I also think that the fact that he couldn't get Betsy (since she worked for the senator) was to blame for his rampage.
Well this is what I got from it. Feel free to disagree!
Enjoy!
(Note on the side, Travis & Iris was our halloween costume idea for this year but it didn't work, maybe next year)
