Question:

The movie Dogma: completely sacrilegious or are there some underlying truths?

I love the movie myself. But I was thinking, is there anyone else out there that find some parts of the movie (though ridiculous) very profound?

Kate, I totally agree. I definitely think there are some underlying truths. For example, Jay will hold a woman to her promise to have sex with him if the world is about to end. :-) Seriously, though, there are some profound truths in there...like the idea that there are no "wrong" religions, and all this time we spend fighting about religion is just a waste. So instead of fighting, let's laugh over our religious differences instead. We'd all be much happier then! :-) I think it's all true -- even the part about Alanis Morissette being god. There were some profound truths there and it had a real message about faith. Think about it, the angels (Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) had been cast out of Heaven but they believed that going through those particular church doors would wipe the slate clean and they were willing to go go extremes to get there and go through it... doing lots of bad things along the way since it's all going to get wiped out anyway.

Or maybe, at that point, they didn't care how many humans they killed because they were just going back to their old habits of wiping out the unjust.

I loved that movie. There are a few underlying truths, but Alanis Morissette as God is completely sacrilegious.
