Answers: He married her because she was a challenge. The world was at his feet, and here was a beautiful woman that he could hold but not really keep. She was beautiful, smart, independant, and he was completely infatuated! And he also thought he could change her. He says so in the movie. He thought that if he could give her everything she wanted he could make her care for him.
