Question:

Movie buffs from the 20's, 30's, 40's: I'm trying to remember the name of a movie, can you help?

I only caught part of it, but here goes: An old black and white film (may have even been silent - it's been awhile since I caught it). A rather garish-looking man who is obviously painted up for the younger part he's attempting to play...is a well known, world-famous pianist. He happens to be in France during the war - a bomb goes off and renders him deaf. He also can't (or won't) play the piano anymore. He shuts himself away from everyone, blaming God and verbally abusing those who try to reach him. He starts watching passers-by through binoculars, and because he's been taught to read lips, he can understand their conversations, even from so very far away. At first, he's scoffing and critical of them and bitter against God, but slowly he starts to open up and begins to do anonymous good deeds to help the people he's spying on. He also reconciles himself with God, and the movie ends with him playing a huge organ in a cathedral. Beautiful story - but what is the movie?

Answers: It's called "The Man Who Played God". It was first done as a silent film in 1922, then as a talkie in 1933.
