Can someone interpret Donnie Darko for me?!

Question:

Can someone interpret Donnie Darko for me?

I want to hear someone else's take on the movie Donni Darko.

Answers: Here's what i get from it:

There is the "normal" world and the "altered" world. The movie begins in the normal world until the plane engine falls through Donnie's room. From then on, for some unknown reason, the altered world is created literally because of this plane engine. (i.e the engine has come from the normal world into altered world)

This means that there is now a "tear" in the universe and it becomes Donnie's job to manipulate the "altered" universe and bring it back together before the universe blows up/caves in on itself/whatever.

The reason why Donnie is picked as the person to bring it back together we can only guess but he is interesting so why not right?

So, Donnie goes through out the movie with the aid of Frank the Bunny as well as the people in the altered universe (albeit unconsciously).

The ENTIRE goal of the movie is to get back to the "normal" world or else the universe is destroyed. Only Donnie has the power to do this, and he is actually given certain super powers (such as super strength when he busts the pipes in school and puts the axe througth the bronze statue.)

The use of the elements such as water (the pipes), fire (burning the pedophile's house) and metal (the actual plane engine) are key to the time travel process.

The people in his life are essentially unconsciously going about their paths in order to give Donnie direction. For example, drew barrymore has the new girl choose to sit beside Donnie (therbye providing motivation for Donnie to sacrifice his life) or when she herself write the words "Cellar Door."

As far as Frank goes, he is the supernatural connection b/w the real and altered world and so he is there to tell Donnie what will happen, but has no power beyond that. I would also say that Frank is a symbol of how far Donnie must go in order to save the world (he will shoot the altered-world Frank knowing that it will be ok in the end)

At the end, when everybody is waking up/crying/looking around etc, that is hte NORMAL world. But everybody has some vague recollection of the altered world and expereince different regret, remorse or whatever.

In a big way, i htink this movie is essentially a superhero movie but it's done in such a way that isn't direct or conventional and as a result people love it.

Chcek this out too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/philosophy_... It's a movie about what might've been.
