Answers:

He really got out of the room. Once the fireman opened the door, the room lost it's power over Mike Enslin. The wife never got near the room! She was stuck in a taxi then, when she got there, the fire alarm had already gone off and everyone was being evacuated. She was outside the building, they weren't letting people in, and she looked up to see the windows blow out of the room because of the fire when the door was opened.

Mike got a grim smile when the tape recorder played because that proved it wasn't all in his head, that he hadn't been drunk or imagining things when he heard his daughter's voice. It proves something supernatural happened.
