Career choice question... Actor or newscaster?!

Question:

Career choice question... Actor or newscaster?

Having lived and worked in the movie industry all my life, I know how hard it is to get acting work. But, if you're good, persistent, and somewhat lucky (and have a good agent) it can happen. I love acting, and all my other professional actor friends tell me it's time that I gave it a shot, film acting that is. I know the money can be good, and the work can be great fun.
BUT, I also am an experienced journalist, I have a great rapport with the camera and the viewing audience, and I love being connected to the community due to journalism's inherent civic involvement. If I did go that route, I'd want to get into feature pieces; the kind of stuff Charles Kuralt used to do, or that Huell Howser does.

If you wish to review some short clips of me on camera, both acting and reporting, check out these links. Could you tell me what you think I'd be better at?
And, what kind of pay does an on-camera reporter get in Southern California?

The competition in So. California keeps the starting wages for television reporters fairly low. Did you notice that the field reporters (not the in studio anchor) are almost never the same people? They change out so frequently that it almost seems like there is a different one each day. This is because it's very difficult for them. There are literally thousands of people that will take your place in a job like that so they don't have to pay you well or treat you right.

Once you get beyond the entry level, things are gravy. So I guess i'm saying, if you can afford to live cheaply and spend your every moment working that job, then go for it!

I think your best bet is to go independent and free lance, both reporting and acting...do both and get paid by the job. Do a feature piece on your own and try to sell it to a station. You might create a nice little niche for yourself.

Of course you know that acting is a shot in the dark. But if you can afford it, why not give it a couple of years. You have to live it though...every moment you are awake.
