I've heard of stars starring in Indie films before they made it big
Answers:
It's short for "independent" or not being made by a major studio that would provide major budgets. Independent films can end up doing some really big business. Michael Moore's movies are considered independent. Anything shown at Sundance is independent, even though the exhibitors are HOPING for studio backing for distributorship.
