Are movies a unsophisticated art form for the dumb-downed masses?!

Question:

Are movies a unsophisticated art form for the dumb-downed masses?

As opposed to sophisticated art form like paintings, poems, literature and theatre.

Answers:

You could argue that movies, being made by a committee, are a much more complex art form than any of the other simple art forms you mention, as they require a larger group than even the average theater production to pull off.

Odd that you don't put theater in the same class as movies as their audiences only relatively recently have become "sophisticated," about the time they became economically nonviable.

Is that what you mean by "sophisticated?" Is it like amateur sports? Somehow making money prevents an art form from being in the Olympics? Thus sophisticated is paintings, poems, literature, and theater, while photography/ representational painting, music, popular books, and movies don't make the cut?

CATS, based on poetry, performed in a theater, and sure proof that neither is a "sophisticated" art form.
