What is a DARK movie anyway?!

Question:

What is a DARK movie anyway?

I never understood the whole "dark" movie thing. I mean, people say that Edward Scissorhands in a "dark" movie, but it's not a horror movie. And now there's "Dark Comedy"? What? Can someone explain this to me?

Answers:

A "dark" (or black) comedy for example might be a picture that makes fun or makes light of someone's death or a dead body. Think of it as depicting "the dark side" of life.

These "dark" movies are ones that could make us laugh but also instill an uneasy feeling. The laughter comes from subject matter that is off beat and perhaps even a little macabre.

A good example is that old movie "Dr. Strangelove"....
a very funny movie with Peter Sellers but, what was the subject, Doomsday...the Nuclear Bomb (finally being dropped accidently over Russia) destroying how many innocent lives and setting off the next World War?

So, a Dark Comedy would be one in which the subject matter or series of events in the movie are about death, destruction and dying but, are presented in a "comedic" or humorous way to draw laughter, rather than grieving.
