Film C.R.A.Z.Y?!

Film C.R.A.Z.Y?
I recently bought the multi-award winning (or a least it id in its homw country) French-Canadian film "C.R.A.Z.Y" after reading a couple of reviewes that raved about this "brilliant" new Coming of age movie. It was a bit of a let-down.
What Im asking here is if anyone can see a good reason for the religious plots that exist within the film? I mean is it a sub-plot, as I beleive, or is it suposed to be part of the actual story main story line along with Zac's sexual confusion?
It is my personal beleif that it is used to emphasise his diffrence from the norm from the start, which is a fair enough reason but it ruins the movie as it is done to extensively
Also it gives the director reason to bring in all the stupid religious pilgrimage at the end of the movie. This is something the director should not have done as it is just too much to deal with in the aking of the film. Don't get me wrong I did enjoy alot of this film but I think the stuff above made a great film medioca.
