Am I the only one who thinks that Tyler Perry's movies lack substance?!

Question:

Am I the only one who thinks that Tyler Perry's movies lack substance?

I recently watched Madea's Family Reunion ( the movie), and I found it to be over dramatic. Don't get me wrong. I love Tyler Perry. I think he is a brillant entertainer but at the same time I think his plays are far better than his movies. All of his material seems to revolve around the same theme (domestic abuse, substance abuse, child abuse, and there is usually a strong black female character). I personally don't think he needs to make anymore movies unless they are originals. I don't think his recent movie, Daddy's Little Girls, did well at the box office because it was rushed to DVD. Is it possible that Tyler is losing his touch? Maybe other people are starting to feel like me about his material.

Answers:

I agree with you.

Diary was his best IMO. I've seen some of his plays too, and the message is the same and often overstated.

His TV show is awful, we removed it from TIVO after 5 episodes. (we did give it a chance tho)

Daddy's Little Girls wasn't bad and I think there was some glimmer of "new-ness" to his work, but nonetheless, Tyler's becoming a bit mundane.
