Learn to set up shots with different angles, transitions between actors, lighting, understanding the emotions of the dialog, editing. Directors are the key ingredient on the tone of the film. They dictate how the film is made. I'm sure you can find some books with much better description of the duties and skill sets a director needs, along with the technical info.
