Commercial and movie idea....?!

Question:

Commercial and movie idea....?

Yeah...I have an idea commercial wise for Nike and I was wondering what the proper process would be to take in order for it not to get stolen.

Also...

This also goes for a movie idea I have...once I write the script, what should I do to ensure that it's not taken.

Answers:

The commercial idea will be difficult to move, because the process is that a company like Nike will come out with a new product, or decide that they need a new marketing campaign for their existing line. They'll contact an advertising agency, who will come up with a list of marketing ideas for them. The agency will not initiate contact to create a marketing campaign. (They might intitiate to establish a working relationship with the company, however.)

So for your commercial idea, it's best just to hold on to it. As an individual you really can't pitch it anywhere. Sometimes though, a company may have a contest where they invite the public to come up with their marketing campaign. Heinz, Oreo, and Nesquik are actually doing this right now.

As far as your movie script goes, I recommend that you register it with either the WGA or the Library of Congress. That way you'll establish an official date of creation. After that you can enter it into contests, or pitch or query producers and agents to get it read.
