The theme is basically about undiscovered worth and there being two sides to every coin. This guy's wife had left him, kicked him to the curb and took her maiden name back, because he was a "diamond in the rough." The very traits that made him kick terrorist @ss are the ones that, if you're married to him, will get on your nerves.

Yeah, we laughed about how he got on the terrorist's nerves but the truth is that he'd gotten on his wife's nerves, too, and it made her want to get away from him. He could be a real @ss when he wanted to be. He's competitive, he's tough, he likes to win, he likes to be "right."

In marriage, you sometimes have to say "Let's not worry about who is right, we both have valid concerns and need to cooperate to find a solution that addresses both sides' concerns." Detective John McClane is not concerned with the other sides' concerns, he concerned about whether he has enough fire power to wipe them out.

But the plot is he goes to visit wife in LA, there he thwarts a terrorist plot to get rich and, in the process, wins a second chance with the wife.
