Where, if anywhere, does the new Transformers movie fit in with the series?
I was a child of the late 90s, so forgive me for never seeing an episode of the cartoon. The night before I saw the new movie, i watched the 1986 movie, just so I would have some knowledge of what was happening. Afterwards I read the summarized version of the original series on Wikipedia. I still don't understand where the new movie fits.
The movie was awesome, by the way. Even for people like me who were born too late.

The movie is based on Generation 1 canon (which consists of the original series and the 1986 film amongst others), but does not fit within the events of that canon. Rather, it can be seen as another interpretation of the basic plot and setting, similar to what was done with the newer animated series Armada, Energon and Cybertron.
