Answers:

I can explain it.

Holly came from a small town and was an escort. Paul Varchak was a writer, who was 'kept' by a wealthy socialite. She missed her brother, and Paul's kindness and face reminded her of her brother, so she called him that.

Holly was a wild child who had to carefully court men while dodge their advances to keep her apartment and her sanity. She had run away from a kindly man, because she couldn't handle being tied down for long, and dreamed of wealth and the freedom to do all the things she'd dreamed of doing.

I wouldn't call her an alcoholic, although she did drink too much. Paul wasn't much of a drinker, he liked to have his wits about him.

The message and story of the movie is, that people need each other, and running won't solve anything. I like to think that Holly perhaps died in her early forties from cancer, and Paul, at her funeral, would remark that she lead several full lifetimes, and had more depth than any eight people you could name.
