Why didnt "the machinist" get widely released?!

Why didnt "the machinist" get widely released?
72 theaters? and only 8 million worldwide total? it was a great movie, critically acclaimed...but no money. would someone like to explain this to me?

Sure, most people dont like good films, you know films where you actually have to think a bit... most people hate movies like the machinist, they would say is a weird boring movie....
Most people looove stupid movies (sorry about the term, i didn't want to say bad movies) like American pie or any action film with CGI, where they can eat pop corn and have a good time (and theres nothing wrong with that).....
Bottom line, movie like the machinist gets widely released equals empty theaters.. theaters that only get full when they show movies like Shrek 3
