Why does the protsitute's boss expect money from Marcello and his girl?

I think that Marcello is just being nice and in the process witnessing all types of women and lifestyles. One of the themes of the movie is different kinds of women because Marcello can't seem to decide what he wants. He appears to be in love with all of them. I think this was a way for the director to show us yet another kind of woman.
