Why do people like the movie Gladiator so much?

I dont think that movie was that good.

Russel Crow is insecure and fights people. What a jerk.

I've have a copy of the movie and i've seen it about 6 times. There is so much to it. Story line, direction, dialogue and more importantly, the action and battle sequences. I also agree with the person above everything that was done in the movie have been done before,but i think one of the things that brought it to life was the story line and action. Have you see 300 lately, or two months ago? Its the same theme but smooth special effect. And it did well.
