What film is it?

I watched this film along time ago adn really enjoyed it, it was one with a really happy ending but I cant remeber what it is called and hoped someone would know if I described it ..

Its about a little boy and his mum adn dad live together but arent together, they have seperate rpooms etc and then as he gets older other chi;dren laugh at him becuase they dont share a room. um.. his mum gets a b.f and i think the liltte boy is really ill for a while, well yhey find out the man he thorugh was his dad wasnt and his mum wants to take him to another country adn not being his dad he has no rights but he knows his dad and tells him and he stops him leaving at the last minute, though I dont think the boy finds out who his real dad is.. well lol then his mum agrees to let him see the man he thought was his dad and it ends with the 'dad' asking what he wants for dinner and he replies something like 'its wednesday we always have ?steak? on wednesdays' like when they lived togteher.

I'm probably wrong, but that kind of sounds like Dear Frankie, or maybe The Squid and the Whale. I have a feeling that's wrong, but maybe that'll help you.
