Two magicians are in a rivalry with each other. Their rivalry turns personal when Hugh Jackman's character's wife is killed by drowning in a tank because she could not escape the knots that were tied by the Christian Bale's character. They do other things to hurt each other in retaliation such as Hugh purposefully shooting Christians hand while he is performing the catching a bullet trick. Christian comes up with a "teleportation" trick that Hugh can't figure out and he becomes obsessed with outdoing him. Eventually the desire to beat him makes Hugh seek out the abomination of a machine made by Tesla that can make clones of himself in order to perform seemingly impossible tricks and also to frame Christian for his own murder (which was really the murder of a clone). At the end it is revealed that Christian had a double (which I'm not sure if it was a legitimate twin or a clone made). They kept this a secret from everyone even his/their wife.
Thematically the movie is about living a life of deception and how far an obsession can drive a person to do unspeakable things.
