What's a good movie about drugs/gangs?

i want to see a movie about how drugs and/or gangs destroyed a person's life. any ideas..?
not scarface though.

Blow, with Johnny Depp, is very good and hip. Trainspotting, with Ewan McGregor, is a Scottish movie; hard to tell what they're saying, but it's pretty much a heroin comedy and is, indeed, pretty funny (comes on digital cable channels a lot like Sundance Channel and IFC). Drugstore Cowboy is a very entertaining movie that revolves around a drug addict played by Matt Dillon; it's from 1989. I'd recommend Requiem for a Dream but I heard it's not very realistic, although it'd certainly suit your quench for drug movies. Half Nelson is a movie that came out last year; Ryan Gosling was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award; I haven't seen it but supposedly it's awesome.

If you're looking for movies about gangs, there's no doubt whatsoever that you need to check out City of God; it's a Brazilian film so it also goes by the name of Cidade de Deus, and it's sub-titled but don't let that bother you because the film's storytelling is greatly told and enjoyable, even if that sounds wrong given the harsh nature of its characters; but it's phenomenal.
