Did anyone else rent "Pan's Labyrinth" thinking it was a children's mo!

Question:

Did anyone else rent "Pan's Labyrinth" thinking it was a children's movie?

I did, and I was in for a shock! It was like the "Platoon" of kid's movies.

Answers:

Yes, I did - well, sort of! The previews made it look like a children's movie. Apart from the obvious movie rating MA in Australia (MA for mature audience, which means definitely not for children, and for those over 15), I was expecting a fairly fantastical, child-like tale with maybe a few bits of gross horror and maybe adult/supernatural themes. You know, those little classification things that can make a movie MA, but after you see the movie, you think "it wasn't that bad". Well, I was in for a surprise.

Imagine my shock when the Captain suddenly started bashing that guy (the rabbit hunter's son) with the bottle (or was it the butt of his gun?), that just completely shocked me and I'm hard to shock. I guess after that I knew it most DEFINITELY was not a children's movie, and that set the violent atmosphere of the movie.

I think this shock factor was good in the sense that it was not shock-for-the-sake-of-shock, but because it fit in conceptually with the subject of war, of realistic horrors. This, balanced with an innocent child's - Ofelia's (or an adult's inner child - us) escape to a world of fantasy to block their mind from the shocking truths about war and people who have lost their innocence (like how the Captain berated Ofelia's stories as "nonsense").

It was twisted, but in a beautiful kind of way.
