Alex's death on final destination?

I'm watching final destination 2, and i'm super confused. i know that clear is alive.. but how did alex die? on the first one i know the sign almost killed him, but that one dude saved him, so he died. but i'm reallly lost on how alex died because he's not in the second movie and they say he died. how did he?

While Clare is in the mental institution, you see newspaper clippings taped to the wall about a brick falling on a man's head in a freak accident. At that time you assume it was Alex. Then, later in the movie, she is freaking out about how there is no way to cheat death, and she never actually says Alex's name, but she describes his freak accident. Again, you assume she is talking about Alex.
