I'm 14 and want to be a director some day, what should I do to get an idea of directing?

Should I make home movies & send them to film festivals?

Now is such a great time to get into filmmaking, because these days all you need to make a movie and get it seen is a digital video camera, a computer, and a good internet connection.

If you have those three things, then go ahead and start shooting. Shoot a lot. Be experimental with the films you shoot and edit. Figure out what works and what doesn't. Then post your results on a video sharing site, like YouTube or Revver. As you develop more of a style and feel more confident with your films, you can start entering them in contests and festivals.

But definitely get started now, because with as much opportunity as there is now for amateur filmmaking, the competition for pro jobs will be that much tougher five years down the line.
