Showing movies in my business....what laws are there?!

Question:

Showing movies in my business....what laws are there?

I am thinking about opeing a business (coffee shop/bakery) i want it to be centered around entertainmetn...movies music etc. i was thinking that i would have a small theater with sofas and comfy chairs, and show one movie a night. the only cost associated with seeing the movie would be to buy a coffee or pastry. would i be breaking any copywright laws or any other laws for that matter? thanks! oh and p.s what do you think of the idea, is it something you would go do?

Answers:

Your shop sounds like a nice place to hang out, but if you require a purchase to watch the movie you'd *definitely* be breaking the law. Even if people are free to watch without buying anything you're still on very shaky ground. Exhibiting movies/tv in any sort of commercial setting makes them a source of interest in your business, and therefore a source of income. If you're serious about doing this I recommend you spend at least a few minutes with a lawyer who specializes in copyright/entertainment law.
