Self-directing?!

Question:

Self-directing?

Something I've wondered for a while now, and I think I know the answer, but I'd like to know for sure.

There are several movies out there where an actor has played a starring role *and* directed the movie. My question is: how is this done?
Does he give himself direction? Is that what an assistant director is for?

Thanks in advance!

Answers:

The director does give himself direction in a way in that he performs the role in the way that he (or she) feels it should be done. They're "giving direction," just internally.

The assistant director is the person who's responsible for keeping the set running smoothly and the crew busy, they'll interact with the cast a little, but rarely in a creative way. Think of the AD as a traffic director and the director as the creative director on the project.
