Why does darth vader wear the life support mask and armor/suit?!

Why does darth vader wear the life support mask and armor/suit?
my friend told me that is was something that happens episode III. So what happend to darth vader or anakin skywalker that made him have to wear that mask in order to live also why is he like half robot? is it the same reason?

While battling Obi-Wan Kenobi on the lava planet Mustafar, Anakin lost to Obi-Wan and incedently lost all of his limbs except for one arm and landed very close to a lava pit. In the movie, he layed near the bit and burned up. In my encyclopedia, he was actually cast into the pit but immediatly brought out by Obi Wan. Either way, he was a fraction of a human. The Emperor, fearing he would lose his precious aprentice, put Darth Vader into a health capsule, took him back to coruscant and immediatly began surgery. Most of his body was replace with robotics and the suit is neccessary to keep the mechanics functioning. Where as he no longer has working lungs, the respiratory now breaths for him.
