Answers:

...regrettably, horror films, and the devoted fans who love them, have always taken a bad rap; the closed-minded people, who time after time, coin horror films (especially the more graphic ones) as something veritably taboo, and the horror film fans as 'sick' and 'dusturbed', fail to realize certain things about the genre.

1). Much as any other film genre, like westerns, adventure films or even romantic films, there is a certain creative artistry, and a lot of times, very reflective, intelligent and poignant social commentary, in these films; even in the cheeziest of horror films typically have something to say about man's ability to survive and endure under certain conditions, albeit horrific and supernatural conditions. This can be seen in films (and have been lautered in much the same way) made way back in the classic Universal monster days, and up to & including the recent trend of 'torture' horror films.

2). In each and everyone of us, there is a deep, primordial, simultaneously compulsion/revulsion to the concept of fear; this proves a most intriguing and irrestible challenge, especially for the die-hard horror film fan ("...come on, scare me!!!...I dare you!!!...Scare me!!!). With each sucessive film, nay with each successive horro film genre, the horror fan takes the challenge with macabre and gleeful relish ("too repulsive to look at...too complusive to turn away", as many horror movie ads proclaim). In the plainest of terms, we're talking a visual roller coaster ride, where at the end, the viewer emerges safe and sound...and relatively unscathed.

The closed-minded folks out there, like to pin the blame for much of the tragedy and crime in today's society, on the horror film genre; in retrospect, if these supposed soothsayers claim that a horror film caused little Johnny to go out and rape, mutilate and kill someone, then the lad was already disturbed in the first place, and just about anything could have set little Johnny off. Horror films have proved to be convenient scapegoats, in this respect.

It has been also claimed that horror films make people callous to the horrors of real life (i.e., crime, murder, disaster, wars, etc.); the folks who claim this, truly refuse to give horror film fans proper credit for having much greater feeling and intelligence than this. History has dictated that man has been wholly responsible for greater horrors than have ever been depicted on the silver screen (..we're talking more the realistic-type horror films, not the supernatually fantastic ones...I think that it's safe to say that we horror films fans are smart enough to differentiate between the two).

Yearly, I like to frequent the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors convention, which tours my general area; in that eventful capacity, I have met some of the most passionate and intellectual individuals, with regards to horror film fans. Indeed, most of them are decked out in black leathers and lace, bear many endarkened and colorful tatoos, and are facially adorned in jewelry piercings; irregardless of these first-impression fashion eccentricities (Hey, to each his or her own, I always say), these people come across as most mature, passionate, intellectual, and full of great character.

Clearly, despite everyone else's opinion will not deter YOU from seeing the horror films you so cherish; I must candidly admit that I've ran into this problem, time and time again, back in the days of the late '70's & early '80's slasher films. This has definately not stopped me from relishing the genre I am so devoted to, and I look forward to each and every up and coming scare the filmmakers have for me, just around the corner, in whatever formation it appears in.

...don't let 'em get to you, my fellow horror film fanatic; your frustration is well worth the passionate expression. Just be loyal to the shock...loyal to the fright...loyal to the scare...and loyal to the gore!!!
