Is it possible to work on your own time and pace when editing videos?!

Question:

Is it possible to work on your own time and pace when editing videos?

well I wanted very badly to be a video editor but after doing research on what it takes, it sounds like it'll make someone suicidal!!!!!!! The long hours, the excessive traveling time and the stress you must work under. I know for sure I cannot possibly physically work more than 12 hours a day but I really want to badly be a film editor. Is it possible to make and edit vidoes on your own and make money or be in a smaller position to be an editor or what? I'm wondering what are the different options out there that won't kill me and can save me from exhaustion and migraines.

Answers:

many of the editors I've met have started their careers by working in a post house that edits commercials. they start as an assistant (basically a go-fer) and learn, watch the editors on staff. Eventually, they're given a small assignment - maybe for a non-profit client - where they get a chance to prove themselves.
I have never heard of them traveling - they work on location at the editting facility.
many of them have gone to film school and learned how to edit at school - or have video editting software on their computers at home. and are self-taught.
if you have this, you can practice on the weekends.
long hours are typically part of any cool gig.
so yes, it is possible - but it will take dedication and persistence. no good jobs are easy to come by.
don't know how you can make videos on your own - unless you know directors and they trust you without you having a sample reel of what you can do. most good productions will hire an editor at the start of the production so the editor and director can talk about how they plan on finishing the project.
hope this helps.
