Is Arthouse the same as Independent Film?!

Question:

Is Arthouse the same as Independent Film?

I read an actor interview that mentioned 'arthouse', wondered if that's slang for Independent? While I'm here, I'll also ask if there's any other slang for Indie that you can think of?

Answers:

You asked a tough question - There's a thin line between arthouse and independent films - They are both independent - They are different in how the films are conceived. An Arthouse film is targeted at a niche audience and is not as concerned about a widespread audience. Strictly Arthouse movies are not as plot driven as a mainstream movie and let the visuals stand out above a fully developed plot with characters and storylines. Think of it as moving art - and sometimes it is the eye of the individual whether it passes as true art. - An independent film can be see by a wide audience - but it is usually financed outside of the studios. Many widely released features are financed independently. George Lucas is the most successful independent filmmaker today!
