For me it had alot fo the same themes as Independence Day with the secret govt alien stashed away and the human race uniting together against aliens but also had traces of
E.T. (boy alien friendship govt agents trying to keep them apart)
Back to the Future ( boy here, suburban family life, gets the girl)
