Charlie Farmer wanted to achieve his dream of going out into space, which is fine. What I don't understand is if he wanted to go into space as an astronaut, why didn't he just join the NASA program?

He dropped out of the program because his father became seriously ill. He earned his aerospace engineering degree and became an Air Force pilot, on his way to NASA’s astronaut training program when his commitment to family forced him to return home, ending his career.
