it seems so obvious that the whole thing is another cover-up for Tom, but yet so many people believe it.
What is the evidence for/against this bizarre and overly-hyped union?

No, I don't have hard evidence, but absolutely everything I've ever learned about human behavior and relationships tells me it's phony.
The most damning piece of evidence to me is that they have never ever explained how they met. Nor have they said particularly why they like each other, except that each one of them is "amazing" or "magnificent." In an interview with Diane Sawyer, after they had been together for a year and Katie was about to give birth, when asked what Tom loved about her, what he knew about her...the FIRST thing that came to mind was that she really likes cupcakes.
That's right. Mother of his child. All he knows - she like cupcakes. Oh, and to laugh. And when she laughs she sticks her tongue out. I've never met Katie Holmes and I could tell you more about her!
Also, everything about their relationship bucked the trend of Hollywood romances - most couples value the little privacy they get and don't go on Oprah and in front of as many cameras as possible to smooch and talk about their burgeoning romance in the first weeks. Tom and Katie were parading it in front of cameras just two weeks after they'd MET each other. I don't tell my friends all about someone I'm dating in the first two or three weeks - it's still too soon. Would you tell the whole world, via paparazzi?
Basically, everything about it screams fake to me. But no proof. Yet. I guess we have to wait for Katie's tell all autobiography in ten years!
