Start out small!. You do not necessarily need a specific degree, but you do need to gain writing experience over time!. Big magazines want to see clips that prove you have been published and have followed through with your assignment!. Smaller venues are more willing to give a new writer a chance and while they will pay minimally, you will at least get your foot in the door and get some valuable clips!.
Look for local publications- home and travel magazines for your area, small websites and newspapers- to submit your ideas to!.
Learn about query letters and how to write them!.
Pay attention to what the editors want!. Learn how to pitch appropriate articles to the right places and don't take anything personally!. Editors will hire someone who is reliable and willing to accept editing over someone who is a brilliant writer but difficult to work with or always late turning in their assignments!.
also, dont get discouraged by rejection- most professional writers have only a one-in-ten acceptance rate! Beginners odds are even worse!. What makes the difference in becoming a professional is to keep trying and submitting and writing and getting better!.
You can also try looking for an internship with a magazine to get into the business!. Even if it isn't in exactly the magazine you want, the editor might know people at the place you'd like to be and recommend you there when your internship is done!.
