Like others said here, work your way up. Work for the school or student union newspaper - that's how I started - and, if you can, see if you can get a placement on a local paper in the vacation (not easy). If you work on the student paper this might help you get to do interviews with local bands etc. and get an idea of how to handle those kind of media situations (always research someone you plan to interview before you do it).

It's still worth trying to learn shorthand even in this day and age. Another route is to write for the web but I think print journalism still offers more grounding in writing skills because it teaches you to be more precise and not waffle. Always be prepared to rewrite and always check your facts and your sources.

I see a lot of people these days who think it's easy to just step into a big name job on a big name magazine. It isn't. Unless you're a celebrity writer you have yo work long and hard to get your name on that byline. Good luck.

You just have to work your way up. Start with something small, like being a freelance writer for a website or publisher like Associated Content. Then, try out for your school paper and just get your name and writing out there and work your way up. You're not going to get a job in a magazine like that at first.. it's going to take some time and you're not going to like every job you get... BUT, if you work hard enough and have determination and not give up your dream of working for one of those magazines, then hopefully one day it will pay off!

Good luck!

I wanna do that too! I'm a journalism student. I agree with the girl before me. It is going to be really hard, but if you really work towards it, you'll get it if it's truly your dream. One thing I would do is make sure you stand out from the crowd. Have experience in not just writing, but fashion too. Do an internship or two with another magazine or in the fashion industry. Study abroad if you have the chance. Good luck to you!
