Middle Eastern girl on magazine cover?!

Question: Back when, I remember seeing a girl who was on the cover of Time magazine I believe of Middle Eastern decent. She was wearing a red(whatever they are called) over her head and she had gorgeous eyes. Does anybody know her name, or give me a link to a photo of her? Thank you

Yes, NGM covered that. They also did a fallow up story. Here is a link where you can see what she looked like a few years later. http://www.stefangeens.com/000133.html

The beautiful Pashtun girl with bright green eyes could have been a supermodel here in the west; instead, she married, bore 4 children, lived through 17 more years of war and poverty, and wears the veil. Sharbat Gula's new portrait, when juxtaposed with the old, is just as powerful. The eyes are paler now, the veil is duller, the face fuller, the stare now more weary than defiant. Seventeen years seem to have passed so fast since I first saw the picture as a teenager in Sydney. I've often stared back at the original portait, and sometimes wondered where and what she was up to. The story is in the April 2002 issue of National Geographic Magazine. (copied from archive)

I'm a freelance photographer... and this is truely one of my favorite pictures... the fallow-up story was amazing!!

Thanks for reminding me of this great picture.
