It has to look attractive for which ever age or sex your doing it for so pick colours carefully!
Also have a big pictures and some titles of articles inside!
catchy headlines that make the people want to buy the magazine and read on inside.
Also Bright eye catching colours do the trick (Y)

What biggie said. Plus a real cool eye-catching photo. It would have helped if you mentioned what type of magazine. But lots of color in your photo and titles of the most exciting, cliff-hanger type of articles that will make people pick it up. Good luck!!
well definitely title and date maybe a subtitle indicating
what the mag is about
and a photo or artwork is good just make sure you
have writen consent if you don't have own the copyright
there may be amateur photographers or artist glad to
let you put their work on the cover in exchange for credit
and most magazine indictate on the first page or two

you should indicate what the mag is about and who
is the target readers in your question so people can be more helpful
I suggest going to the bookstore and look at the magazines for sale. Look at which "jump out" at you, then look at the reasons why they stand out from the rest.
The masthead creates brand image and should give the reader some idea of the content. Pictures or illustrations are important but design is even more crucial. It has to be eye-catching and memorable. Design is about both words and pictures, but try to keep words to a minimum on the cover.
Obviously other 'furniture' like date, edition, bar code, price, etc, are needed too but should not detract from the overall impression.
