Process of making glossy magazines?!

Question: so those of you who are/have been in the magazine industry and know how it is printed and what process it goes through could you tell me. Like is there designing needed to be done? any printing? scanning? Computer work(CAD if u no what that means)? Are there any websites that could help me.

magazine layouts can be done using a programme like Quark Xpress or Adobe Indesign/ Adobe creative suite (which also includes Photoshop etc).

The process differs on every magazine slightly, and varies depending on what type of magazine it is - glossy or trade. This is a rough process outlined:

1. At the start of every magazine cycle, a "flatplan" is created by the production editor. This is a basic drawing of every page of the magazine, outling which article is going on each page, and where the adverts are to be placed. Everyone gets a copy of this so they are all working off the same thing - this included the editors, subs, sales people, printers etc
2. copy comes in from the writers
3. Copy is sub-edited by the sub-editors and laid out using page layout application by the sub-editors and/or designers. Headlines and standfirsts are written and pictures are found to go with the article, either through a pic agency or photographers are commissioned and yes, if they are hard copies they have to be scanned in first.
4. Pages are printed out and given to the editors who then give their changes.
5. changes are made on the pages which are then printed out and given back to the editors again. this process can take place 2-3 times. During the process pictures might change, headlines might change, the copy can be checked by lawyers in case of libel and every fact is double checked.
6. When pages are ready, ie.subbed/designed/checked thoroughly and signed off by the editor and everyone is happy, the adverts are placed on the page. The page is then sent to the printers. This can either be done directly via isdn/FTP/website, or thru another method or through a repro company.
