Start off by collecting the top 100 billboard songs from the past 100 years or so. Then, work to collect the entire discography (all their recordings) of very popular musicians. From their, just go deeper and deeper, making sure to touch on all genres.

Well it depends on what type of music and what form of music (record, cd, digital, tape). The most common is cd and record. for both you should have a good stereo with good speakers. you also should have shelves and a dedicated place to neatly organize your collection. for cd's its good to have extra cases. for records its good to have a record player with a fairly new needle and a good cleaner. if its digital i suggest a big hard drive. for example i have a 1TB HDD and half of it is full of RoIo's that i trade freely over the internet. And also a good set of computer speakers. once you really build you physical collection its good to label things by numbers and have the numbers written down in a binder for easy access and such.
