A good agent will have the connections to get you the jobs as well as knowing what you should do to make yourself more marketable. Nobody got famous without an agent. Even those people who were found in the corner coffee shop had an agent after they were discovered. Those that didn't have agents, made one movie or photo shoot and were never heard from again.
At the same time, a bad agent will not do you any good. If your agents isn't getting you results, look for someone else. If you are going on jobs and they seems to be getting even a little bit better each time, your agent is probably doing a good job.
Depends on what the agent is for, and at what stage of your career you are in.
They only take a percentage of the money you earn from a job that they got you, so, they're not really taking your money, they are taking their fee.
Change the agent then. Find a loophole in the contract. Get a lawyer.
