I want to become a magazine editor?!

Question: I want to become a magazine editor when i grow up(I'm now 16), but i don't know what the different types of editors there are. I know theres like a fashion editor but i don't know the rest. And i either want to work for seventeen magazine or cosmo girl. So my question is, what are the different types of magazine editors?

There are many types of magazine editors. What you can do is open up your favorite magazine to the first few pages and read the masthead (it's like the opening credits of a movie). There are fashion editors, feature editors, accessories editors, photo editors, etc. There are many different names like associate editor and assigning editor -- you can find more about that from ed2010 or Mediabistro.

If you want to work for Seventeen or CosmoGirl, I suggest getting an internship there once you are in college. For now, you can work for your school's paper and/or yearbook.

You can also sign up to be a CosmoGirl stringer. That would be really great for you to do. You just apply when they say they are looking for new stringers, which is usually in spring. It's a great opportunity because you get to talk w/editors and interns via e-mail. They ask you to help them with their stories, and you and your friends get the chance to be in the magazine! They also present great opportunities like interviewing someone for Project 2024. I'll post the link at the bottom so you have more info.

Good luck!
